What is racism?

Many people use social platforms like Twitter, Instagram or Facebook to publish news. This can be in the form of a short text, a video or a photo. Often it is about current topics.

At the moment the topic "racism" goes viral. But what does racism actually mean?

One speaks of racism, for example, when people because of their skin colour or origin:

  • are discriminated against,
  • be insulted,
  • are considered "stupid".

In racism people are divided into "races". Certain characteristics and character traits are attributed to them which have little or nothing to do with reality. Other people think that these people are "worse" or less valuable. But this is not true. The human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people are thereby impaired. Not only in the political or social sphere, but also in the economic and cultural spheres.

Examples in the public sector
  • Controls on public transport
  • frequent staring
  • insulting comments

What is discrimination?

Racism is described as a perception. Discrimination is a concrete action in which an individual or a group is disadvantaged in real life. These are often described as "inferior" and treated worse. For example: the person has dark skin. Therefore he or she does not get a job. This is unfair.
