(Day) Care Centers

In Germany there are various day-care centres for children, such as "Kitas" oder "Kindertagesstätten", kindergartens, day nurseries ("Kinderkrippen"), and after-school care centres ("Kinderhorte"). Child day care facilities look after children on weekdays over a certain period of the day. The different facilities also offer different care times.

The term "Kita" is actually an umbrella term, because a Kita usually consists of several childcare facilities.

A kindergarten is intended for children from 3 to 6 or 7 years, and a day nursery looks after children under 3 years.

"Kinderhorte" are intended for primary school children and are a form of after-school care. Pedagogical staff works there. They are responsible for the care and education of the children.

Usually, you have to pay child (day) care facilities to look after your child. Each facility only has a limited number of places available. If you would like to place your child in a day care centre, you should therefore inform yourself at an early stage and ask for a place.

Further information can be found, for example, on kita.de (link in German).
