Apartments: Which insurances do I need?

If you have rented an apartment, you should take out insurances against damages. As a tenant of an apartment, you should take out a liability and household insurance. The costs for insurance contracts vary greatly. It is worth informing yourself objectively beforehand. Some comparison portals have specialized on insurance and offer information about where the desired insurance is available at a reasonable price.

Liability insurance

Liability insurance is recommended for everyone in order to be insured against personal injury, property damage and financial losses caused by them. Damages in the private environment of the insured person are covered, especially in the areas of leisure, sport, family and neighbourhood.
Typical damage cases in the area of living would be a vase that you break while watering the flowers of your neighbors. However, it is also imaginable that you have not fulfilled your duty of winter road clearance in time and that a pedestrian has fallen heavily and is hospitalized with various broken bones. If the obligation to clear ice and snow in front of your building was transferred to you in the tenancy agreement, you are liable with your assets for the damage claims incurred.
If you do not have liability insurance, you must pay for unlimited damages caused by yourself with your own income and assets. A little carelessness can therefore mean financial ruin.

Houshold insurance

Household insurance covers damage to household items caused by fire, storm, damage to tap water, explosion, but also burglary, theft or vandalism. All household items such as furniture, carpets, clothing, appliances and similar items are insured. Cash and securities are also insured, but only up to a certain limit.
Important: The property of subtenants is excluded from the insurance. In addition, many insurance contracts lay down so-called due diligence obligations. If, for example, you turn on your stove and leave your home, the insurance company may not cover the damage incurred in the event of a claim.
In order to determine the insurance sum, you must estimate the value of your household effects. You can do this yourself or together with your insurance company. Some insurance companies also offer a lump sum calculation, in which a lump sum per square metre is fixed and used to determine the sum insured for the entire apartment.
