Medical exams & vaccinations for children

Regular medical examinations for children

Every child in Germany receives a yellow medical check-up booklet. The medical check-ups (U1-U9 and J1) are free of charge. A doctor will examine your child and check to see if they are healthy and developing according to their age. The doctor will perform a few examinations to check their eyes and ears, for example. If the doctor observes any health issues, he will refer you to a medical specialist. That way, you will be able to get help for your child as quickly as possible. You will receive a letter for every medical check-up. You have to take this letter as well as your child’s medical check-up booklet to your pediatrician. If you do not take your child to the doctor for their medical check-up within the time period set in the letter, your health insurance provider or social welfare office may not cover the cost of the treatment.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are crucial to protect yourself from diseases. Catching and spreading diseases can be prevented if people get vaccinated. For this reason, the expenses for most vaccinations are covered by the health insurance provider. Every person that gets vaccinated in Germany receives a yellow vaccination booklet from their doctor. All your vaccinations are recorded in the vaccination booklet. When you enroll your child at a kindergarten or at a school, you will always be asked for their vaccination booklet. There are many difficult medical terms in the vaccination booklet. Here you can find translations for them in 15 languages:
