Help against hay fever

Not only Corona is a very current topic at present, but also hay fever. The nice weather not only provides us with warm temperatures. The nice weather also has a lot of pollen in our luggage. Since many millions of people suffer from it, we answer the most important questions about hay fever here.

What is hay fever?

Hay fever is an allergic reaction of the nasal mucosa and conjunctiva. The allergic rhinitis is caused by the pollen of trees, bushes, grasses, grains and herbs.

What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction?

When the pollen reaches our eye and nasal mucous membranes, our body produces antibodies. In contrast, we release chemical substances. This is called "histamine". The consequences are watery and itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing attacks and breathing difficulties
However, the allergy can also lead to gastrointestinal disorders, tiredness and concentration problems. Many people also suffer from asthma. This should therefore be taken very seriously to avoid more serious consequences such as allergic shock.

Is a visit to the doctor necessary?

Definitely. You should definitely have a check-up. Hay fever is actually a chronic inflammation. Without proper therapy or treatment it can lead to a "change of levels". This means that the pure rhinitis turns into allergic asthma. And so the bronchial tubes can be attacked. That is why you should go and see a doctor. It can be the normal family doctor or an ear, nose and throat doctor

How can allergy sufferers protect themselves?

It is recommended to change clothes when entering the apartment. It is also advisable to rinse your hair with water before going to bed. Showering your nose helps to rinse out the pollen. If there is a high pollen count, you should avoid outdoor sports.
In the countryside, the pollen load is highest in the early morning hours. In the city the maximum is reached in the evening. Experts therefore say to air the bedroom at night and close the windows in the early morning. They should also be kept closed during the day. So remember: it's best to air the room early in the morning - always rather short than long. Pollen screens at the window are helpful.

Which medicines help?

There are different medications for hay fever. They come in the form of nasal spray, eye drops or tablets. Cortision sprays and these antihistamines are usually over-the-counter. However, health insurance companies only pay in very exceptional cases. It is best to ask your doctor which medicines you should take. There are also some for which you need a prescription

The so-called "hyposensitization" is highly recommended. This can be used to treat the cause of an allergy. The doctor will examine you to find out what you are allergic to. Then these allergens are administered to you in increasing doses. The body gets used to it and builds up antibodies. The process is time-consuming. You should definitely discuss this with your doctor. With the help of sensitization the allergy will not go away completely. But it helps you to be free of symptoms for a longer period of time and to breathe freely.

What else do you need to consider?

Asthma, and also allergic asthma, is considered a risk in Covid-19 disease. Therefore, those affected by asthma should be careful, especially now. It is recommended to wear a mouth and nose protector to protect others. Since April 27, masks have been compulsory in public places, shops and public transport throughout Germany.
